On January 30th, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released its 2021 report on sales and marketing expenditures for cigarettes and smokeless tobacco in the United States.
According to a report, the largest cigarette company in the United States sold 190.2 billion cigarettes to national wholesalers and retailers in 2021, a decrease from the 203.7 billion sold in 2020. Mint-flavored cigarettes now hold a market share of 37% among major manufacturers, more than double the 16% market share they held in 1963.
Sales of smokeless tobacco decreased from 126.8 million pounds in 2020 to 122 million pounds in 2021, while revenue increased from $4.82 billion in 2020 to $4.96 billion in 2021. Mint-flavored smokeless tobacco products account for over half of all sales, while fruit-flavored smokeless tobacco products make up 2.7%.
In addition, sales of nicotine lozenges or pouches without tobacco in 2021 amounted to $804.8 million, which is higher than the $422.7 million recorded in 2020.
Note: The smokeless tobacco referred to in the report refers to non-burning or non-inhalable tobacco products, including chewing tobacco, snuff, snus, and dissolvable tobacco products, and does not include electronic cigarettes.
