Growing Concerns Over Youth E-Cigarette Sales in Scotland
Scottish e-cigarette sales to minors have doubled, with an 80% increase in cases reported and stricter penalties imposed.

According to a recent report by the Daily Record, new data shows that sales of e-cigarettes in Scotland to minors have nearly doubled in the past year, with an increase of up to 80%. The growing trend of young people using e-cigarettes is becoming increasingly concerning.

An investigation has found that the number of cases reported to local governments regarding the illegal sale of e-cigarette devices to minors has skyrocketed from 383 in 2022 to 684 last year, an increase of 80%. These data, obtained through freedom of information requests by the city hall, reflect a growing trend of youth vaping e-cigarettes. However, activists point out that this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to underage sales, as most cases go undetected.

A recent survey found that one in every four 15-year-old teenagers in Scotland admits to regularly using e-cigarettes. Meanwhile, the latest data shows that efforts to crack down on the illegal sale of e-cigarettes are increasing, with 146 stores being caught in 2023 for selling e-cigarettes to children, a significant increase from the previous year's 63 stores.

According to reports, Scotland issued fines, penalties, and license reviews to retailers violating the law increased from 45 cases in 2022 to 152 cases in 2023. The actual amount of fines increased from less than £10,000 in 2022 to £31,980 in 2023.

Against the backdrop of the successful push for a ban on disposable e-cigarettes in the UK, the issue has become more pressing. The colors and flavors of these e-cigarettes are particularly attractive to minors. In response, Scottish Green Party health spokesperson, Gillian Mackay, stated:

This phenomenon is worrying and points to some unsettling trends, but it is just the tip of the iceberg.

She further emphasized that e-cigarette companies and retailers must take responsibility and stop selling these harmful products.

Many brands specifically target young people with fruity flavors and bright colors, which is completely inappropriate. It is necessary to strengthen employee training and enforcement, as relying solely on these measures is not enough. It is essential to ensure that these e-cigarettes are hidden from view and kept away from teenagers.

Director of Vape Club, Dan Marchant, stated:

Reputable sellers will take measures to ensure that children cannot purchase e-cigarette products, such as conducting thorough digital age verification for each customer. In addition, on-site fines have proven effective in preventing underage drinking, but this cannot replace significant fines for businesses.

Machan added:

The best deterrent to any crime is the possibility of being caught, but currently this probability is very low, and illegal retailers are taking full advantage of this. We must create an environment where the chance of getting caught is higher.
