According to ANTARA News on June 22, the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) has called on the Jakarta government to expedite the long-delayed approval of the "Smoke-Free Zone Regional Regulation" and emphasized the necessity of protecting public health and upholding consumer rights. YLKI Chairperson Niti Emiliana cited Law No. 17 of 2023, which authorizes local governments to establish smoke-free zones.
"YLKI also called for the regulation to include more comprehensive provisions, strengthen consumer protection, and protect them from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke such as elderly individuals, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and young children."
Emily Ann said. She emphasized that the regulation is currently being reviewed by a special committee and must be passed by 2025.
However, the draft regulation has encountered opposition from the Jakarta branch of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), which believes that certain provisions may create operational burdens for businesses in the hotel industry.
