According to a report by Headtopics on August 5th, the Indonesian government has issued an important update to tobacco packaging design in Government Regulation No. 28 of 2024. As per Article 438 of the regulation, tobacco packaging must now prominently display health warning images and text.
Representative Hasbullah from the Tobacco Control Committee approved of this. In an interview in Jakarta on August 3rd, he said,
We welcome this change as we have been waiting for four years. The age restriction for purchasing cigarettes has now been raised to 21 years old, which marks a significant progression.
In addition, the regulation also stipulates that outdoor media advertisements such as video ads can only be aired between 10:00 pm and 5:00 am local time. This measure aims to reduce the impact of tobacco advertising on the public, especially on minors and adolescents.
The 28th government regulation of 2024 enforces strict guidelines on tobacco and e-cigarette advertising. According to this regulation, all tobacco advertisements must include a warning stating "Sale and provision to individuals under 21 years of age and pregnant women are prohibited." In addition, advertising targeting children, teenagers, and pregnant women is prohibited, and cartoon or animated characters cannot be used as advertising figures.
According to reports, the law was recently signed into effect by Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
