A recent study on e-cigarette use among Polish youth shows that one-third of 16- to 17-year-olds report using nicotine-containing products, with nearly 80% using e-cigarettes, according to an October 30 report in Tygodnik Powszechny.
Three-quarters of young e-cigarette users started using nicotine products before the age of 15, with e-cigarettes being their preferred choice. About 66% of respondents enjoy experimenting with different flavors, while 50% are driven by curiosity for new experiences. In addition, one in eight teens sees e-cigarette use as a way to keep up with peer trends.
Aleksandra Lewandowska, a consultant in child psychiatry, noted that Poland is considering a ban on the sale of nicotine-free e-cigarettes to under-18s, while nicotine-containing products are already banned, although enforcement remains a challenge.
The medical community is urging the government to impose a complete ban on disposable e-cigarettes, including "nicotine-free" products, which are seen as potentially more addictive.
