New Zealand government proposes ban on smoking for younger generations.
New Zealand proposes ban on smoking for those born after 2009, aiming to become a smoke-free nation. Exceptions made for heated tobacco products and e-cigarettes.

The New Zealand Ardern government has submitted legislation to parliament demanding that people born after 2009 are prohibited from smoking for their entire lives. The bill is expected to pass and be enacted by the end of the year with a majority vote.

Current law allows smoking from the age of 18. However, with the implementation of a new law, the number of people legally allowed to smoke will gradually decrease as they reach the expected end of their lifespan, leading to a "smoke-free country." Heated non-combustible cigarettes and e-cigarettes will temporarily be allowed under certain restrictions. Similar efforts have been made by some local governments in the United States and the Philippines, but this is the first time it has been introduced at a national level in the world.
