Nigeria's FCCPC Fines BAT Parties $110 Million for Violations
Nigeria's FCCPC fines British American Tobacco Nigeria $110 million for violating competition and consumer protection laws.

According to Sahara Reporters on December 27th, the Nigerian Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has imposed a fine of $110 million on British American Tobacco Nigeria Limited and its subsidiaries (referred to as BAT Parties). The reason for the fine is that they have violated the 2018 Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, as well as other related tobacco control regulations and directives.


The committee further indicated that BAT Parties will undergo 24 months of compliance and monitoring under the committee's supervision to ensure their behavior and business practices are adjusted in accordance with existing competition regulations and tobacco control efforts.


The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has disclosed its investigation activities from 2020 to 2023, which include reaching a final resolution with British American Tobacco Nigeria Limited (BATN), British American Tobacco Marketing Nigeria Limited (BATMN), British American Tobacco Company, and British American Tobacco (Holdings) Limited (collectively referred to as BAT Parties) for a series of violations of federal competition and consumer protection laws, the National Tobacco Control Act, and various legal documents in 2023.


The FCCPC also stated that further investigations have been conducted based on credible grounds and sufficient evidence. On August 28, 2020, a court issued a search and seizure order against British American Tobacco Nigeria and its affiliated companies (referred to as BAT Parties).


On January 25, 2021, the committee conducted simultaneous searches and seizures at various locations of the BAT Parties and one service provider based on the decision and detention order.

A federal judge in Texas on Oct. 8 granted a joint request by the FDA and plaintiffs including Altria subsidiaries Helix Innovations and NJOY to stay litigation challenging the agency's 2021 PMTA rule. The court cited FDA's anticipated rulemaking concerning the regulation at issue. FDA announced on Sept. 28 that it intends to reassess the PMTA framework and could initiate new rulemaking to replace it. The parties must file a joint status report within 45 days and every 45 days thereafter. A motion by three Reynolds American companies to intervene remains pending.

At the 2026 NACS Show in Las Vegas, JTI Liggett highlighted its value-priced cigarette portfolio, including LD and Montego, following JT Group's acquisition of Vector Group. Smoore and four authorized U.S. CCELL distributors are asking a California federal court to permanently dismiss a core antitrust claim brought by direct purchasers. Plaintiffs allege that Smoore coordinated minimum wholesale prices, customer allocation and limits on price competition among distributors, amounting to a per se unlawful horizontal conspiracy. The defendants say the alleged conduct reflects ordinary vertical relationships between a manufacturer and its distributors. The court previously dismissed a similar claim, and the latest dispute centers on whether the second amended complaint adds sufficient facts to establish a horizontal agreement.

British American Tobacco has appointed former Apple Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary Bruce Sewell as an independent non-executive director, effective January 1, 2027. He will also join BAT's Audit and Nominations Committees. BAT Chair Luc Jobin highlighted Sewell's experience in technology, government and regulatory affairs, public-company governance and AI-company boards. Over the past 18 months, BAT has changed or announced changes to its CFO, general counsel, CMO and APMEA regional leadership, while the main board has also seen multiple changes. The appointment comes as BAT advances Horizon 2030 and its Fit2Win transformation while expanding New Categories and reshaping parts of its digital, technology and operating structure.

Eleftheria (Ria) Kioupritzi, a biopharmaceutical professional with more than 15 years of experience, has joined Philip Morris International as Director Scientific Affairs within Corporate Affairs. She previously served at Roche as Senior Scientific Communications Director for Neuroscience and Rare Diseases and worked extensively in spinal muscular atrophy. Her earlier career also covered competitive intelligence, clinical and regulatory monitoring, pipeline development and launch preparation. During her time working in Roche's SMA field, Evrysdi passed through several U.S. FDA milestones, including its initial approval, an expanded indication for younger infants and approval of a tablet formulation. Public records do not show that Kioupritzi herself led the FDA submissions.

JTI Proposes 25-Cent Irish Cigarette Tax Increase, Says It Could Raise €45 Million
Japan Tobacco International's Irish business has proposed a €0.25 tax increase on a pack of 20 cigarettes in its pre-Budget 2027 submission, below the €0.50-or-more increases typically imposed in recent Irish budgets. JTI says the proposal could generate around €45 million in additional Exchequer revenue while limiting further movement toward illicit and non-Irish-tax-paid tobacco. Revenue's existing estimate for a comparable €0.25 increase, including pro-rata rises on other tobacco products, is about €18 million for a full year.
