Osaka to Implement City-Wide Smoking Ban Ahead of 2025 World Expo
Osaka Mayor Yokoyama announced a city-wide smoking ban starting January 27, 2025, in preparation for the World Expo in April.

The Mayor of Osaka City, Hideyuki Yokoyama announced during a special audit committee meeting of the city council that Osaka City will implement a city-wide smoking ban starting on January 27, 2025. This initiative is aimed at preparing for the World Expo scheduled to open in April, according to The Mainichi on November 12.

The Osaka City Government implemented a street smoking ban ordinance as early as 2007, designating six areas including the JR Osaka station surroundings and busy tourist spots as no-smoking zones. Violators face a fine of 1000 yen (approximately $6.5). In March of this year, the city council passed a revised ordinance to expand the smoke-free areas to cover the entire city.

The city government expects that, when the revised regulation takes effect, there will be over 140 smoking areas through new construction and the renovation of existing ones. By the time of the World Expo opening, the number of smoking areas is projected to increase to about 300.

"We will strengthen awareness and guidance systems while actively sharing relevant information to promote improvement of the environment suitable for an international tourist city," Mayor Yokoyama said.
