According to a report by Johojima on September 11, there are currently approximately 1800 pachinko parlors in Japan that have designated areas for heated tobacco products. The total number of operating pachinko parlors is around 6430, making up approximately 28% of the total.
Two years ago, the number stood at around 1,500 (20%), increasing by about 300 in the past two years.
Although the rate of increasing designated smoking areas has slowed down, the proportion of these areas is still on the rise as many businesses are closing. Particularly, in the recent years, the majority of newly opened stores have also adopted this layout.
Since the full implementation of the amended Health Promotion Law in April 2020, entertainment facilities are prohibited from smoking in principle, with only specific designated areas allowing the use of heated tobacco products at that time. Now, shops with "heated tobacco areas" are becoming more common.
