According to recent reports by Leamingtonobserver, the usage of e-cigarettes among children and young people has seen a noticeable increase in recent years. In response to this trend, there has been a call to the young population in Warwickshire County, UK, urging them to refrain from using e-cigarettes.
According to data from the UK's National Health Service (NHS) in 2021, the proportion of teenagers aged 11-15 using e-cigarettes has risen from 6% in 2018 to 9%. In response, the Warwickshire County Council is collaborating with schools and parents to encourage open dialogues about e-cigarettes with young people. The aim is to increase their awareness of the risks associated with e-cigarettes and to provide them with factual information so that they can make informed decisions.
The National Excellence Research Center recommends that individuals who have never smoked should not use e-cigarettes. Additionally, the Warwickshire County Council has introduced an educational toolkit for schools, offering a range of information, resources, and age-appropriate teaching plans regarding e-cigarettes.
The public health team in Warwickshire is also collaborating closely to offer advice and support to schools regarding any information and policies they intend to introduce.
The county's health spokesperson, Margaret Bell, stated:
We are aware of the growing rate at which young people are using e-cigarettes, and we are making efforts to support schools, parents, and caregivers in working together with young individuals to raise their awareness of the risks associated with e-cigarettes. While the risks of e-cigarettes are lower compared to traditional cigarettes, they are not without risk. Therefore, our message to everyone is: if you do not smoke, refrain from using e-cigarettes.
