Research indicates that the use of e-cigarettes among girls in the UK has more than doubled over a three-year period. Last year, 21% of girls reported using e-cigarettes, surpassing the 10% reported in 2018.
Overall, according to shocking data from NHS Digital, nearly one in ten girls between the ages of 11 and 15 used e-cigarettes last year.
Child health experts are calling for action against electronic cigarettes, which are illegal for children under the age of 18.
Dr. Michael McKenzie of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health is calling for strict limitations on plain packaging and advertising. He states that companies are targeting children with "bright packaging, exotic flavors, and attractive names" and these products are readily available in stores on every street in the UK. Children have no concept of their own health and if action is not taken promptly, multiple generations may become addicted to nicotine.
Professor Ann McNeill, a tobacco addiction expert at King's College London, expressed concern over the rise of e-cigarettes among young people.
She added that we need to understand the reasons for the surge in data, whether it's in packaging, marketing, flavor, or addiction.
The report also revealed that since 2018, the smoking rate among secondary school students has decreased from 5% to 3%. The percentage of those who have attempted drug use has also decreased from 24% to 18%.
