According to Voice of OC, the temporary ban on tobacco shops in Stanton, California will be extended for more than 10 months as state officials study how to enforce the recent ban on flavored tobacco products.
The Stanton City Council unanimously voted to extend the temporary ban they established in early January for 45 days to over 10 months at their meeting on February 27th.
Tobacco retailers are defined as stores where at least 50% of their regular inventory consists of tobacco products. This temporary ban will prevent the opening of any new tobacco retail businesses, as well as the expansion or changes of any existing businesses, with the exception of routine repairs or maintenance for existing tobacco businesses.
Government officials are requesting a temporary ban on tobacco shops so they can have more time to draft new laws to address the issue. "This will be beneficial as it will give us an opportunity to study it," Mayor David Shawver stated at the February 27 meeting.
The ban went into effect after a city government inspection revealed that five out of eleven tobacco shops were illegally selling flavored e-cigarettes. The state now prohibits any tobacco shop or vending machine from selling flavored tobacco products. Violators will face a fine of $250 or have their license revoked for each offense.
City attorney HongDao Nguyen stated that the city government will continue to accept business applications, including those from tobacco retailers, but will not issue any new permits or licenses during the ban period.
The residents of the area approved the initial ban at a meeting on January 23, extending the ban to take effect on February 27.
