According to plovdiv24 on February 25th, the World Vapers Alliance (WVA) strongly condemned the decision of the Bulgarian Parliament to completely ban e-cigarette products. The organization stated that this policy was triggered by a tragic incident involving black market THC e-cigarettes, but that the ban will only exacerbate the real issue, which is a lack of effective regulation of the black market selling dangerous products.
The World Vaping Association (WVA) has issued a warning that Bulgaria has the highest smoking rate in the European Union, reaching 37%. Despite concerning statistics, Bulgarian lawmakers have chosen to abandon an effective harm reduction tool - e-cigarettes to help smokers quit. Their policies will only push adult e-cigarette users back to smoking or the black market.
The director of the World E-Cigarette Alliance, Michael Landl, pointed out that...
This ban is not only unreasonable, but also dangerous. Prohibiting regulated e-cigarette products does not address the issue of illegal e-cigarettes, it will only make the situation worse.
E-cigarettes are not the enemy - they are the most effective tool many of us have found to quit smoking. Currently, only 3% of Bulgarians use e-cigarettes, but it is already the most popular method of smoking cessation in our country. Countries like Sweden, New Zealand, and the UK, which have adopted harm reduction policies, are moving towards a smoke-free future. At the current pace of development, Bulgaria will never be able to achieve this goal.
The World Vapers' Alliance calls on Bulgarian legislators to reconsider this policy and to establish evidence-based regulations promoting safer alternatives in order to reduce smoking rates and protect public health.
