E-cigarette use in Germany up 38% in seven years, disposables most popular

A German study found that between 2016 and 2023, e-cigarette usage rose by 38%, with disposable e-cigarette use increasing significantly, especially among young women who often also smoke traditional cigarettes.

A survey by the University Hospital of Düsseldorf in Germany shows a growing prevalence of e-cigarettes, while the number of traditional tobacco smokers remains high, according to a report in Apotheken-Umschau on November 4.

A total of 92,327 Germans aged 14 and older participated in a survey on e-cigarette use from 2016 to 2023. Results indicate that e-cigarette usage in Germany increased by approximately 38% during this period, with around 2.2% of the population now using e-cigarettes. Meanwhile, the proportion of traditional tobacco smokers remains steady at 30%.

The study also found that disposable e-cigarette use has significantly increased since early 2022, making it the most commonly used e-cigarette type in Germany. Users of disposable e-cigarettes are, on average, four years younger than those who use reusable devices, with the majority being female and concurrently smoking traditional cigarettes.

Study lead Daniel Kotz explained, "Young people are particularly susceptible to nicotine addiction and risk suffering consequences from consuming both e-cigarettes and tobacco."
