Turkish Authorities Conduct Operation Against Illegal Tobacco Trade and Organized Crime
Police in Turkey seized a large amount of smuggled tobacco and arrested five suspects in an operation.

According to a report from Turkish media outlet "TECHEDEN News" on December 27th, the local office of illegal transactions and organized crime conducted a raid on five businesses involved in the sale of smuggled tobacco.

 

During the process of apprehension, the police discovered 320,600 empty cigarette tubes with counterfeit tax stamps, 22,500 cigarette papers, 2,230 packaged cigarettes, 296 bottles of e-liquid for e-cigarettes, 50 e-cigarettes, 25 kilograms of waterpipe tobacco, 16 kilograms of pre-cut tobacco, cigarette-making machines, and compressors. Additionally, five suspects have been detained.

 

Local authorities conducted a thorough inspection of a suspicious vehicle at a checkpoint, revealing the discovery of 30 firearm components and an unlicensed handgun. Subsequently, two suspects were apprehended.

 

Currently, the prosecution of the detained suspect has been initiated.

JTI Proposes 25-Cent Irish Cigarette Tax Increase, Says It Could Raise €45 Million
Japan Tobacco International's Irish business has proposed a €0.25 tax increase on a pack of 20 cigarettes in its pre-Budget 2027 submission, below the €0.50-or-more increases typically imposed in recent Irish budgets. JTI says the proposal could generate around €45 million in additional Exchequer revenue while limiting further movement toward illicit and non-Irish-tax-paid tobacco. Revenue's existing estimate for a comparable €0.25 increase, including pro-rata rises on other tobacco products, is about €18 million for a full year.

The Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction, a project operated by Knowledge·Action·Change, estimates that about 200 million people worldwide use non-combustible nicotine products including vapes, heated tobacco, nicotine pouches and snus. Its 2026 report says use of these products rose alongside declining smoking rates in 28 countries it analyzed. The data do not establish that all 200 million users have quit smoking, nor do they prove a direct causal relationship. GSTHR also says regulatory restrictions on the products continue to expand in many markets.

As cigarette markets face long-term pressure, major tobacco companies are increasingly turning to nicotine pouches in search of growth beyond combustible tobacco. Reuters has examined whether nicotine pouches can become the next strategic growth platform for companies including Philip Morris International, British American Tobacco and Japan Tobacco. PMI strengthened its position through the acquisition of Swedish Match and its ZYN brand, while BAT and JTI continue expanding their own nicotine pouch portfolios. The category has gained attention because of its smoke-free, device-free format, but regulation, youth-use concerns and market scale will determine whether it can become a long-term growth engine.

IKE Tech Launches IKE 2.0 Compliance Platform for Nicotine Products
IKE Tech launched IKE 2.0 on September 28, initially targeting nicotine products with a platform that combines user identity verification, product authentication, configurable policy controls and data analytics. Products can be authenticated through direct device integration or NFC smart tags. IKE Tech was formed with participation from Ispire's Aspire North America, Berify and Chemular, with Ispire currently holding a 40% interest. Its age-verification component PMTA was accepted by the FDA in 2025 and remains under review. The company did not disclose customer names, commercial deployment volumes, pricing or revenue tied to IKE 2.0.
