Turkish Customs Crack Down on Smuggling Operations in Istanbul
Turkish customs seize 700kg of crystal meth and 30,700 e-cigarettes in two separate operations in Istanbul and Kapikule.

According to a report from Ensonhaber on August 24, the Turkish Customs Protection General Directorate seized approximately 700 kilograms of methamphetamine and 30,700 e-cigarettes in two separate operations at the Istanbul and Kapikule customs offices aimed at combating smuggling.


The operation in Merxin was coordinated and led by the Intelligence Bureau of the Customs Protection General Administration. Customs Protection personnel at Merxin first used the land border vehicle tracking system to query the latest records of vehicles.


In response to this case, the prosecutor's office has initiated an investigation process.

British American Tobacco New Zealand said the illicit tobacco trade is responsible for its profit halving and revenue falling between the 2024 and 2025 financial years. Financial results filed with the Companies Office show that BAT Holdings (New Zealand) recorded 2025 revenue of NZ$180.7 million, or about US$106.95 million based on the European Central Bank’s April 27, 2026 reference rates, down from NZ$254 million, or about US$150.33 million, in 2024.

Turkish Trade Minister Ömer Bolat disclosed enforcement figures on e-cigarette smuggling in response to a written parliamentary question. Over the past five years, Türkiye recorded 4,163 raids targeting e-cigarette smuggling, preventing illegal e-cigarettes, liquids and components worth TRY 1.84 billion, or about USD 40.68 million based on an exchange rate of USD 1 = TRY 45.2339, from reaching the market.

Data from convenience insight agency Talysis shows that the value of tobacco, vapes and smoking alternatives in the independent convenience sector fell by 4.4% in the first quarter of 2026, while volume fell by 7.8%.
