According to a report from Letsrecycle on October 11, the North Yorkshire County Council has launched an e-cigarette disposal scheme ahead of National Recycle Week (October 14-20). E-cigarette collection bins have been installed at all 20 Household Waste Recycling Centers (HWRCs) in the area.
The collected e-cigarettes will be transported to a recycling facility for dismantling, which includes removing the lithium-ion batteries for proper disposal, and recovering the metals and plastics. Improper disposal of e-cigarettes can lead to fires and waste of valuable resources.
This year, a study by Material Focus revealed that the British public is purchasing 7.7 million disposable e-cigarettes per week, which is twice the amount compared to 2022. Additionally, the study found that 5 million disposable e-cigarettes are being discarded each week, equivalent to 8 per second, marking a four-fold increase from 2022.
North Yorkshire County Council Waste Service Performance Committee Chairman Greg White stated,
This exciting new initiative aims to ensure that people who use e-cigarettes understand how to properly dispose of them. E-cigarettes cannot be recycled or disposed of in household trash bins or boxes. Improperly discarded e-cigarettes could result in significant damage or serious harm.
In August, we also introduced coffee capsule recycling bins at our recycling center, as we aim to continue expanding the range of items accepted at the center. These efforts demonstrate our commitment to responsible recycling and reducing carbon footprint.
