Youth Smoking Declines in Indonesia, But E-cigarette Usage Rises
Recent health survey in Indonesia shows decrease in underage smoking but rise in e-cigarette use, according to Jakarta Globe on May 29.

According to a report in the Jakarta Globe on May 29th, a recent health survey in Indonesia showed a decrease in the number of underage smokers, but an increase in the use of e-cigarettes.


According to data from the Indonesian Health Survey (SKI), the smoking rate among children aged 10 to 18 decreased to 7.4% in 2023, compared to 9.1% in the baseline health survey in 2018.


However, this number is still higher than the 7.2% in 2013, as well as the target of 5.4% set in the National Mid-Term Development Plan for 2015-2019, as stated by Eva Susanti, Director of the Ministry of Health's Disease Prevention and Control Department, during a press conference on World No Tobacco Day in Jakarta on May 29th.


Meanwhile, the percentage of underage individuals using e-cigarettes has risen from 0.06% in 2018 to 0.13% in 2023.


In order to prevent children from smoking or using e-cigarettes, the Indonesian Ministry of Health is intensifying its efforts. Measures include banning the consumption of tobacco and e-cigarettes by children and pregnant women, prohibiting tobacco advertising on social media, and banning the sale of single cigarettes.
