Alabama lawmakers are considering a ban on e-cigarette use in public places to strengthen regulation and protect public health.

According to a report by WAAY 31 News on September 5th, Alabama lawmakers may ban the use of e-cigarettes in public places.

Alabama lawmakers are considering passing House Bill 10 to ban the use of e-cigarettes in public places, in order to strengthen regulations on e-cigarettes. This proposal would include e-cigarettes in the scope of the Clean Air Act, which has been restricting smoking in public places since its implementation in 2003. If the proposal is passed, Alabama would become one of the few states in the US to implement such a ban.

Currently, the use of e-cigarettes in Alabama is relatively lenient, unless there are specific regulations in place in local cities.

MP Barbara Drummond and Senator Gerald Allen are the main supporters of the proposal, emphasizing the potential risks of e-cigarettes to public health. They pointed out the need for education to raise awareness of the dangers of these products. Drummond had previously pushed for an e-cigarette bill in 2019, which restricted the sale of e-cigarettes to minors. She stated that the implementation of the new bill would help enforce stricter regulations.

A drug surveillance study conducted last year showed that nearly 20% of teenagers admitted to using e-cigarettes. Dr. Lamond expressed concerns about the increasing exposure of young people to e-cigarettes and believes that as a lawmaker, she has a responsibility to protect public health.
