Australian Health Minister Introduces E-cigarette Reform Act
Australian Health Minister Mark Butler introduced the "2024 Therapeutic Goods and Other Legislation Amendment (E-cigarette Reform) Bill" today.

According to a report by miragenews on March 21, Australian Health Minister Mark Butler introduced the "2024 Therapeutic Goods and Other Legislation Amendment (e-cigarette Reform) Bill" today. The bill aims to protect young people from the harms of e-cigarettes by prohibiting the manufacturing, advertising, supply, and commercial possession of non-therapeutic disposable e-cigarettes.

In conjunction with regulatory changes introduced earlier this year, the bill will restrict the import, distribution, and supply of all e-cigarettes and limit them solely to established pharmaceutical supply chains. Once the legislation takes effect, tobacco merchants, e-cigarette shops, and convenience stores will no longer be able to legally supply any type of e-cigarette, ensuring that patients can access e-cigarettes through legitimate channels.

At the same time, this bill includes a framework for illegal activities related to the import, manufacture, supply, advertisement, and commercialization of e-cigarettes, along with civil fines. Penalties for convicted offenders will be increased, with a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment.

These reforms align with the guidelines of the Australian Tobacco Strategy 2023-2030.
