According to a report by Metro on April 22, despite the recent proposal of a smoking ban by the UK government still being in the agenda, it has been revealed that the government has been providing tax-free tobacco to Ukrainian soldiers receiving training in the UK.
This proposal was put forward by the UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace and former Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov.
According to a plan reached by the Ministry of Defense, Ukrainian soldiers training in the UK will receive tax-free tobacco as part of their rations. In the UK, tobacco prices average about 15 pounds per pack, while in Ukraine, a pack of 20 cigarettes costs approximately only 1.70 pounds.
Currently, the British Defense Minister has approved the tax-exempt portion of the deal with the Treasury, and has obtained approval for legal risks from the Department of Health and Social Security.
According to reports, the agreement has been in progress since 2022.
