Canada to Ban Most E-Cigarette Flavors Nationwide, Health Minister Says
Canadian government to ban most e-cigarette flavors nationwide, aiming to curb youth usage and tackle illegal market concerns.

According to a report by Headtopics on October 20, the Minister of Mental Health and Addiction Services in Canada announced that the federal government will ban most e-cigarette flavors nationwide. This move marks the first time the federal government has committed to implementing these regulations in over three years. The new regulations will restrict e-cigarette flavors, only allowing mint, menthol, and tobacco flavors.

According to reports, the Canadian Department of Health has indicated that various flavors of e-cigarettes are considered one of the factors leading to the increase in the number of young people using e-cigarettes. Studies have shown that young people are more likely to start trying e-cigarettes with fruit and sweet flavors, with nearly half of young adults having tried e-cigarettes. According to the latest Canadian Tobacco and Nicotine Survey, the majority of new e-cigarette users (86%) have never smoked cigarettes.

Experts have pointed out that in regions where e-cigarette flavors are prohibited, such as Quebec, an easily accessible illegal market has emerged. In response, Flory Doucas, co-director of the Quebec Coalition for Tobacco Control, stated that this is exactly why the federal government needs to implement a nationwide flavor ban.

Doukas stated that the nicotine and e-cigarette industry can quickly find loopholes to evade new restrictions, but this should not be a reason for the federal government to hesitate. Sam Tam, president of the Canadian E-cigarette Association, pointed out that adult smokers rely on e-cigarettes as a harm reduction option, and attractive flavors make it easier for them to make the switch.
