Crackdown on Illegal E-Cigarette Sales in Liverpool, UK

Liverpool Express reports that since February 2024, Liverpool City Council has shut down 15 shops selling illegal e-cigarettes.

According to recent reports from Liverpool Express, the Liverpool City Council in the UK has closed down 15 shops selling illegal e-cigarettes since February 2024.

Since January 2024, over 18,000 e-cigarettes have been seized from these stores, with an estimated market value of approximately £220,000.

While genuine e-cigarette products are an effective tool for those looking to quit smoking, all seized e-cigarettes are illegal because their nicotine content exceeds the legal limit of 20 milligrams per milliliter and 600 puffs. Many e-cigarette products claim to provide 3500 to 9000 puffs.

Liverpool City Health Director Matt Ashton said:

The ongoing success in our efforts to combat illegal e-cigarette operations has led to the seizure of a significant number of harmful products. The collaboration between the Tobacco Department, city law and governance departments, and public health colleagues has sent a clear message to other retailers in our city who are trading in illegal products. While legitimate e-cigarette products continue to provide a viable option for those looking to quit smoking, our advice remains that these products should always be purchased from reputable retailers and if you haven't started smoking, do not start using e-cigarettes.
