Meeting between State Tobacco Monopoly Administration and PMI

Head of State Tobacco Monopoly Administration, Wang Gongcheng, met with Philip Morris International executives in Beijing on January 16.

On January 16th, Wang Gongcheng, a member of the Communist Party group and Deputy Director of the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration, held a friendly meeting in Beijing with the visiting delegation of Paul Riley, President of East Asia and Australia Region, as well as global duty-free operations leader of Philip Morris International (PMI).

The heads of the External Affairs Division, Development Planning Division, Supervision and Administration Division for Monopolized Sales, Economic Operations Division, China National Tobacco Sales Corporation, and China Tobacco International Limited attended the meeting.

PMI reported strong third-quarter 2025 results, underscoring the continued success of its smoke-free transformation. KT&G Nears ASF Acquisition, Preparing Wide Regional Nicotine Pouch Expansion

South Korean outlet nate reports that KT&G expects to finalize its acquisition of Nordic nicotine pouch maker ASF within this year. Beginning next year, the company plans to expand the business well beyond ASF’s current five Nordic markets to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and North America, supported by its cooperation framework with Altria.

South Korea’s National Assembly Passes Law Classifying E-Cigarettes as Tobacco Products with Full Equivalent Regulation

South Korea’s National Assembly recently passed a comprehensive package of 79 bills that, among other measures, formally classifies liquid vapes — e-cigarette products using nicotine-containing e-liquids — as tobacco products. These products will now be subject to the same taxation, sales restrictions and advertising controls as traditional cigarettes, and the vaping industry in South Korea is expected to face significant adjustments in compliance costs, market access and business strategy.
