New York City Eyes Disposable Vape Ban With $5,000 Fines
New York City council members propose banning the sale of all disposable vapes to curb the spread of illegal flavored vapes, with violators facing hefty fines.

Council member Julie Menin (D-Manhattan) will introduce a bill Thursday that would ban single-use vapes, according to a report by the New York Post on November 20th.

Mei Ning said that the ban on disposable vapes will ultimately plug loopholes and prevent the proliferation of the "flood of illegal flavored vapes".

If the bill is passed, street vendors caught violating the ban will face a fine of $1,000 for the first offense, with subsequent offenses carrying a maximum penalty of $5,000.

On November 7th, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that the city is suing a distributor that sells disposable flavored e-cigarettes. In July 2023, the Adams administration filed a federal lawsuit against four major distributors, and in April 2024 announced a second lawsuit against 11 e-cigarette distributors. These cases are still pending.

The National Youth Tobacco Survey has shown that over 2.5 million middle and high school students in the United States have used e-cigarettes in the past 30 days. A follow-up survey conducted by the organization one year later revealed that flavored e-cigarettes remain the "most popular product" among young people.
