Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer Pushes Marijuana Legalization Legislation
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is pushing for marijuana legislation and a new bill for legalization in the US.

According to a report from Marijuana Moment on May 9, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is pushing for marijuana legislation and introducing a new bill for marijuana legalization. He stated that the nationwide process of legalizing marijuana on a large scale is a "great experiment," providing citizens with more freedom in conservative as well as progressive states.

The senator was asked on Wednesday about a potential policy inconsistency between his advocacy for marijuana reform and his call to crack down on the nicotine product "Zyn." He broadly stated that when it comes to the legalization of marijuana, "the states have already conducted some good experiments."

Crime rates have not increased, and the issue of drug addiction has not escalated either. People have more freedom. Even in conservative states, the majority of Americans are accepting of the decriminalization of marijuana, as demonstrated by the overwhelming victory in the Ohio referendum.

Regarding the issue of the nicotine pouch "Zyn", Senator John Fetterman criticized Schumer's double standards in January of this year. Fetterman opposed Schumer's call for federal agencies to investigate the appeal of nicotine pouches promoted on social media to adolescents and their health effects, stating that this is a matter of "freedom and individual choice".

When making decisions, I tend to lean towards more freedom and personal choice. I also presented the same argument when advocating for the legalization of marijuana.

On Wednesday, Schumer declined to comment on questions regarding "Zyn" posed by reporters, but he has expressed interest in advancing marijuana policy reform multiple times.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden, Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, and other Democratic senators jointly reintroduced a federal marijuana legalization bill last week. The Department of Justice also announced a historic policy shift towards reclassifying marijuana.

Schumer stated that although the proposal by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to reclassify marijuana is a "historic step forward," he is still "firmly committed to advancing marijuana banking and legalization legislation during this session."

At the same time, the White House on Wednesday declined to disclose whether President Joe Biden personally supports the Justice Department's plan to reclassify marijuana after review.
