Strict Age Verification: Preventing Underage E-cigarette Sales in Wiltshire
Retailers in Wiltshire advised to strictly check IDs for underage e-cigarette buyers to prevent illegal sales to minors.

According to the British media outlet Greatest Hits Radio, retailers in Wiltshire have been advised to make sure they conduct strict ID checks on underage individuals attempting to purchase e-cigarettes. This comes after an e-cigarette shop in Salisbury, Surrey was ordered to close for three months for selling e-cigarette products to minors.

Rob Green, Senior Investigator at the Wiltshire Trading Standards Authority, stated that they receive complaints every week from parents, schools, and community groups about children being exposed to e-cigarettes. He also mentioned that this could lead to antisocial behavior and litter problems.

Rob added:

The number of complaints we are currently receiving about minors purchasing e-cigarettes is higher than at any time in recent years.

These complaints mainly come from businesses that have observed their competitors violating the law, as well as concerned parents.

Rob calls for all venues selling e-cigarettes to implement the "Think 25 policy," which requires age verification for customers under the age of 25, including checking identification. He emphasizes that...

Carefully inspect their identification cards and consider various forms of identification that they may present. Ensure that these documents are genuine and valid. Even so, if there are still doubts about the authenticity of the identification card, you have the full right to refuse the sale.

After receiving public complaints, the Wilts County Trading Standards Authority conducts secret test purchases to confirm any violations. Rob stated that once a complaint is submitted, the store will be notified and given relevant advice. He warned that selling e-cigarettes or e-cigarette products to minors is a criminal offense that could result in individuals and businesses being prosecuted.
