Thailand’s Deputy Finance Minister, Paophum Rojanasakul, announced the launch of a “QR Cigarette” system to track tobacco products from production to consumption, according to the Pattaya News on November 16.
The system is designed to improve tax collection efficiency, increase transparency, and meet international compliance standards by building a comprehensive big data network.
Each cigarette pack will feature a unique QR code that consumers can scan with their smartphones to view details such as the brand, manufacturer, tax payment date, transportation location, and price. Any mismatch between the scanned information and the physical product may indicate smuggling or counterfeiting.
Additionally, the system includes a reporting feature, enabling consumers to directly report suspicious products to tax authorities.
