Tucson Unified School District Receives $7 Million Settlement Funds from JUUL

Tucson Unified School District receives $7 million settlement from JUUL, plans to address student drug abuse and mental health.

According to a report by KJZZ on March 12, 2023, the Tucson Unified School District in Arizona received a $7 million settlement in a lawsuit against the e-cigarette company JUUL. The district's governing board has now decided how to use this compensation money.

The Tucson Unified School District sued JUUL in 2019 for marketing nicotine products to teenagers. The lawsuit was settled in March 2023 for an amount exceeding $10 million, with around $7 million remaining after legal fees. In September 2023, the district established a working group to decide how to allocate the settlement funds.

At the recent board meeting, members approved a plan to allocate half of the funds to hire five community health workers and two project managers to address student substance abuse and other mental health issues. The other half will be donated to community organizations focused on these issues.
