Cluj-Napoca: Romania's First Smoke-Free City?
Cluj-Napoca in Romania could become the country's first city to implement a smoking ban in public areas.

According to Antena3 reported on January 12th, the city of Cluj-Napoca in Romania may become the country's first to implement a smoking ban in public places such as parks, playgrounds, and streets. The mayor of the city, Emil Boc, announced that this measure will be gradually implemented after public discussion.

The mayor pointed out that the plan was inspired by the model of Milan. Since January 1, 2025, Milan has banned smoking in public places, unless keeping at least 10 meters away from others, violators will face fines of 40-240 euros.

The city government's goal is to implement a smoking ban in parks, playgrounds, and sports facilities. Currently, officials are studying the legal framework in Romania to determine if local bans are allowed in the absence of national legislation. Some city parks have already started enforcing smoking regulations.

If this measure is implemented, Cluj-Napoca will become the first city in Romania to ban smoking in all public places.
