Couple Intercepted at Friendship Bridge with 1900 E-Cigarettes
Couple intercepted with $80,000 worth of e-cigarettes on Friendship Bridge, sparking investigation into tobacco smuggling.

Recently, according to a report by the media outlet H2FOZ, a couple was intercepted by the police at the Friendship Bridge while carrying e-cigarettes worth 80,000 Brazilian Reals. A total of 1,900 e-cigarettes were seized. The arrested woman claimed that she had intended to go shopping at the Iguaçu Falls in Foz do Iguaçu.

 

In response, the police believe this explanation is clearly false and have launched an in-depth investigation into the direction of tobacco smuggling.

UK HMRC Urges Public to Report Suspicious Vape Shops in Crackdown on Tax Fraud, Money Laundering and Illicit Tobacco Sales
HM Revenue & Customs is urging members of the public to report vape shops, barber shops and other high-street businesses suspected of tax fraud, money laundering or other illegal activity, with informants not required to provide personal details. HMRC plans more than 30,000 interventions in 2026-27 targeting tax fraud, organised crime and illicit activity, including the sale of illegal vapes and tobacco. The push forms part of a broader UK effort to tackle organised crime on high streets, backed by a £30 million government enforcement programme.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection proposal to collect foreign export declarations and other overseas customs documents could expose discrepancies in the value, classification and description of China-made vape shipments entering the United States. A veteran Chinese logistics professional told 2Firsts that the measure, if implemented, could undermine the all-inclusive shipping model used by some unauthorized vape exporters and push parts of the trade toward costlier underground channels. The risk extends beyond higher duties: accurately declared products may also be more readily identified as unauthorized e-cigarettes subject to FDA enforcement.

Australia’s tobacco excise debate is increasingly exposing differences within the governing Labor Party. New South Wales Labor Premier Chris Minns reaffirmed on September 8 that he supports reducing tobacco excise, arguing that current tax settings are pushing consumers toward cheaper black-market cigarettes. Federal Health Minister Mark Butler continues to oppose an excise cut, while Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino have recently stopped short of ruling out future changes.
