Germany Celebrates New Marijuana Law in Berlin City Center
Germany celebrates new law decriminalizing personal marijuana use, allowing possession and limited home cultivation, effective April 1.

According to a report by eldiarioar on April 10th, many cannabis consumers in Germany gathered in the city center of Berlin to celebrate a new law that decriminalizes personal use of cannabis and replaces criminal penalties with civil fines. The regulation came into effect on April 1st, allowing adults to carry up to 25 grams of cannabis in Germany and grow up to three plants at home.

On the same day, Henry Plottke, a member of the German Hemp Association (DHV), stated, "We can finally reveal our identities openly, no longer needing to hide.

Health Minister Karl Lauterbach stated that marijuana has "left the prohibition zone." He believes that this decision will greatly assist in actually helping drug addicts, preventing adolescent drug use, and combating black market support.

This law makes Germany one of the most tolerant countries in Europe when it comes to cannabis, with Malta and Luxembourg set to legalize recreational cannabis consumption in 2021 and 2023 respectively. Despite the regulation taking effect on April 1st, consumers will still have to wait another three months before they can legally purchase cannabis in "cannabis social clubs." According to the regulation, these clubs can have a maximum of 500 members and distribute 50 grams of cannabis per member per month.

Social Democratic Party Prime Minister Olaf Scholz believes that the legalization of marijuana will help in more effectively combating drug smuggling. He emphasizes that marijuana will still be prohibited for individuals under the age of 18, and regulations will be put in place to prohibit the use of marijuana within 100 meters of schools, kindergartens, and children's parks and squares.
