Illegal Tobacco Products Seized in Pleasanton by Police Department
Pleasanton Police Department seizes over $130,000 worth of illegal tobacco products in crackdown on non-compliant retailers.

According to a report by Pleasanton Weekly on August 23, the Pleasanton Police Department (PPD) recently seized over $130,000 worth of illegal tobacco products at three stores in California. The products included flavored tobacco, e-cigarettes, and other prohibited items, including brands such as "GEEK BAR" and "FLUM" e-cigarettes.

According to officials from the city police department, on August 8th, they conducted surprise inspections at three tobacco stores in collaboration with the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) and city regulatory enforcement officers. They found that not all tobacco retailers were in compliance with the law, as they continued to sell these products to minors in their stores.

Recently, the governor of the state, Gavin Newsom, signed a law prohibiting retail stores from selling most flavored tobacco products, including flavored e-cigarettes. This law was implemented due to the increasing use of e-cigarettes and tobacco products among young people. Subsequently, the cities of Pleasanton, Whittier, and Dublin also passed similar bans.

According to the PPD (Police Department),

Businesses found selling flavored tobacco products will be fined. In some cases, the tobacco sales license may be revoked for 30 days.

From Border-Logistics Insiders to Retail Service Stations, Australia Mounts a Sweeping Crackdown on the Illicit Nicotine Trade as iGET Vapes Surface in A$80 Million Crime Networks
Australian authorities have disclosed two major enforcement actions that go beyond product seizures and retail closures to examine how illicit tobacco and vape networks operate. On Aug. 14, the Multi Agency Strike Team said seven people had been charged and two criminal networks were valued by authorities at a combined A$80 million, or about US$56.8 million. Investigators allege the groups used bonded warehouses, freight businesses and “trusted insiders” in legitimate industries to circumvent border controls. In a separate operation on Aug. 11, more than 100 service stations were targeted as authorities sought information on illicit tobacco importation, distribution networks and the movement of sales proceeds.

Juul Sublicense Reshapes Vuse Alto Patent Bill as Court Ends R.J. Reynolds’ 5.25% Royalty Obligation to Altria
According to Law360 on August 31, 2026, a federal judge in North Carolina ruled that a patent sublicense between R.J. Reynolds Vapor Co. and Juul Labs Inc. relieves Reynolds of its obligation to continue paying royalties to Altria Client Services LLC over Vuse Alto. A jury had previously found that Vuse Alto infringed three Altria patents and awarded approximately $95.2 million in past damages, after which Reynolds was ordered to pay an ongoing royalty equal to 5.25% of positive net sales. The new ruling finds that a valid sublicense can eliminate future infringement, potentially ending what Altria described as hundreds of millions of dollars in future royalties.

Thirty PACHA SKUs were previously tentatively identified for a proposed public list of products that the FDA generally does not intend to prioritize for enforcement. Charlie’s is also preparing test-market sales of age-gated flavored disposables and says it currently holds 678 PMTA-related product assets while seeking additional strategic transactions and partnerships.

China’s Zhengzhou Tobacco Research Institute develops end-to-end heated tobacco analysis to trace aerosol compound origins
The Zhengzhou Tobacco Research Institute of China National Tobacco Corporation has filed a patent application for an end-to-end method to analyze the migration and transformation of chemical compounds in heated tobacco products. Using GC-Orbitrap/MS non-targeted analysis, the method compares tobacco substrate and aerosol samples to distinguish compounds transferred directly from the substrate from those newly formed during heating, while also calculating transfer rates. In an example involving nine heated tobacco products, the patent identified 17 newly formed thermal decomposition compounds and 38 transferred compounds.
