On Friday, the office of the mayor of Chicago announced that electronic cigarette manufacturer Juul Labs Inc. has reached a $23.8 million settlement agreement with the city of Chicago. The city had accused Juul Labs of deceptive marketing and selling e-cigarettes to underage users. The settlement is equivalent to 164 million yuan.
According to a report by Reuters, this electronic cigarette company is currently facing thousands of lawsuits across the United States, which involve its marketing practices and contributing to the increase in youth smoking rates.
In the settlement agreement, Chicago officials stated that Juul had denied any improper behavior or responsibility related to the design, manufacturing, production, advertising, marketing, distribution, sale, use, and performance of their product.
According to the settlement agreement, the company has agreed to pay $2.8 million (equivalent to $19.34 million under the contract) to the city within 30 days of the agreement's implementation.
The office of the Mayor of Chicago has announced that the city is set to receive an additional $21 million later this year as part of its current plans, with the possibility of further court settlements of up to $750,000.
