Michigan Education Leaders Call for Action on Student Substance Use

Michigan education leaders urge action on e-cigarette and marijuana use in schools to address rising issues.

According to a report from 953MNC on May 13, some educational leaders in Michigan are calling on the state government to take action to address the issues of e-cigarette and marijuana use in schools.

The principal of Detroit School District, Nikolai Vitti, has stated that there has been a sharp increase in cases of students consuming marijuana-infused foods and using e-cigarettes. According to Vitti, the Detroit School District has already recorded 745 drug-related incidents this year.

Although the state allows adults 21 and older to use recreational marijuana, school officials say parents should take steps to ensure students do not have access to these products.

The principal called for the implementation of a marijuana tax to help schools purchase detection systems for e-cigarettes and marijuana. At the same time, they urged for a ban on marijuana packaging that mimics candy to ensure that marijuana products are not marketed towards children.

Smoking Rate Drops to 17.9%, Vaping Rate Climbs to 9.3% in South Korea

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) released its 2025 Community Health Survey results covering more than 230,000 adults. Traditional cigarette smoking dropped to 17.9%, down 1 percentage point from last year, while e-cigarette use increased to 9.3%, up 0.6 points. Overall tobacco product use stood at 22.1%, a slight decline from 2024 but still 0.5 points higher than 2019.
