Protest Letter Urges Closure of E-Cigarette Store in Otani
Residents of Otane, New Zealand, have submitted a protest against the establishment of an e-cigarette store in their town.

According to a report by nzherald, Kerry Low, a resident of Otani in New Zealand, has submitted a letter of protest to the Mayor of Whakatane, Alex Walker, opposing the establishment of an e-cigarette store in Otani. The Otani community has taken steps to prevent the sale of e-cigarette products in their town.

 

The Otani Community in the San Hu Ke Bay Area received a petition signed by 502 individuals opposing the establishment of an e-cigarette shop in the town and calling for its closure. Otani resident Kerry Low, after seeking advice, handed over the petition to the mayor, expressing concerns about the sale of e-cigarette products in town and their impact on the local youth.

 

Mayor Alex Walker stated that the local council has made decisions regarding the sale and supply of alcohol after consulting with the community, but they do not have the authority to regulate the sale of e-cigarette products in the same manner. However, they do have a legal obligation to promote community well-being and have the capability to provide valuable local context and knowledge.

The meeting comes as China seeks public comment on a draft mandatory national standard for heated cigarettes. New York vape distributor Ecto World, which operates as Demand Vape, hired political consultant Roger Stone to lobby the Executive Office of the President on regulation of vaping and related products while facing state enforcement and multiple lawsuits. Public lobbying disclosures show that Ecto World paid at least $300,000 for the work through June 30, 2026. Separately, New York State announced in March that more than 28,500 pounds of vaping products tied to the company had been seized, while New York City and the state have pursued legal or enforcement actions. China-based Hunan China Tobacco Industry Co., Ltd. and Shenzhen Baisha Technology Co., Ltd. have filed a patent application covering an adult-user identification mechanism for heated tobacco devices. New Zealand Associate Health Minister Casey Costello Warns on Illicit Cigarettes as Legal Tobacco Sales Halve Over Decade
New Zealand Associate Health Minister Casey Costello said legal tobacco sales in the country have fallen by more than half over the past decade, with sales declining more than 20% in 2025 compared with the previous year. She warned that the decline may not fully reflect lower smoking rates, as increased availability of illicit cigarettes could also be contributing. The government said it would continue strengthening tobacco and vape retail enforcement while monitoring the impact of illicit tobacco on public health and tax revenue.

From Nicotine Salts to Cocrystals: China’s Shenzhen Huabao institute explores a more stable form for sustained nicotine release
China-based Shenzhen Huabao Collaborative Innovation Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. has filed a patent application for a nicotine-ascorbic acid cocrystal, exploring a new solid-state form of nicotine. The patent proposes applications across e-liquids, heated tobacco sticks, oral tobacco, chewing tobacco and snuff. In nicotine pouch tests disclosed in the filing, cocrystal formulations showed less than a 6% decline in nicotine content after three months of accelerated storage and a release profile combining early-stage release with sustained delivery over 60 minutes. The filing reflects exploration of nicotine forms beyond conventional nicotine base and nicotine salts.
