According to a report from WKRN on August 8th, data shows that the age at which teenagers in the state of Tennessee are starting to use e-cigarettes is earlier than it was five years ago.
According to a survey conducted by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS) on high school students, the average age at which teenagers start using e-cigarettes has decreased from 14.4 years old to 13.8 years old.
Tony Jackson, Director of the Prevention Department of the agency, stated that the frequency of e-cigarette use among adolescents has surpassed that of alcohol, marijuana, cigarettes, and prescription drugs.
The survey found that nearly one third of teenagers have used an e-cigarette at some point in their lifetime.
However, he also pointed out that the rate of growth in e-cigarette use among teenagers is slowing down.
In 2018, 19.1% of students reported using nicotine e-cigarettes in the past 30 days, but by 2023, this proportion had decreased to 13.2%.
Jackson emphasizes that community involvement is crucial in reducing the percentage of teenagers using e-cigarettes.
This requires the strength of the community. This requires the involvement of families... to provide support for these teenagers and young people.
