Nebraska Legislature Considers Tax on Nicotine Pouches and Electricity
Nebraska legislature's tax committee to hold final hearings on flavored nicotine pouch tax and residential electricity exemption proposal.

According to Norfolk Daily News on August 7th, the tax committee of the legislature in the state of Nebraska will hold its final two public hearings this Wednesday morning to discuss proposals to tax flavored nicotine pouches and to exempt residential electricity from taxation.

The impromptu public hearing will begin at 9 am to discuss two potential amendments to Bill No. 9.

One of the amendments includes:

Amendment 62 will impose a special tax of 10 cents per ounce on "alternative nicotine products." The committee announced on Monday (the 5th) that this tax will include oral tobacco products such as ZYN nicotine pouches, a brand that has seen a significant increase in underage usage.

The main sponsor of Senate Bill 9 is Senator Jana Hughes from Suede, Texas. She expressed her delight on Tuesday evening that the committee will consider a nicotine tax.

Hughes has been working to increase taxes on vaping products and combat their use among teenagers. She also stated that there are plans to research this type of product before the 2025 conference.

The committee is expected to vote later this week on whether to submit the revised 9th bill to the full legislative body for debate.
