2Firsts, reporting from Shenzhen - According to Naewna, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Thai Prime Minister, met with several government and police officials on March 14 to discuss the crackdown on e-cigarettes.
She expressed satisfaction with the enforcement efforts over the past two weeks but stressed that authorities would remain vigilant and continue to take strict action against the illegal production and sale of e-cigarettes.
Authorities filed a total of 1,078 e-cigarette cases over the past two weeks. Police arrested 1,104 individuals and seized more than 900,000 illegal items, with a total estimated value of approximately 1.19 billion Thai baht ($355 million).
Shinawatra emphasized the need for all departments to continue strengthening efforts to crack down on illegal activities, especially cross-border smuggling and the illicit sale of goods on social media platforms.
Certain e-cigarette products have also been modified for the consumption of drugs and have become an initial gateway for youth drug use. Shinawatra stressed that stricter measures will be taken against e-cigarette and drug-related crimes, as they are major issues causing distress to the public.
