BVTE warns against potential ban on mint flavor in e-cigarettes, citing lack of health threats in recent BfR assessment.

According to a report from Presseportal on December 15, the German Federal Association of Tobacco and New Products (BVTE) has expressed its opinion on the new assessment of e-cigarette flavors released by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR). The assessment did not recommend banning the use of mint flavor in e-liquids. BVTE warned that if the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture introduces new regulations, it could have a significant impact on e-cigarette consumers and the market in Germany.

BVTE pointed out that in its latest statement on December 4, 2024, the BfR did not find that mint flavor poses a health threat to e-cigarette consumers, nor is there evidence to suggest that mint flavor enhances nicotine absorption. BVTE CEO Jan Mücke warned the government not to enact new regulations based on this assessment in order to avoid negative consequences for smokers attempting to switch to lower harm e-cigarettes.

Jan Mücke warned that if Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir considers implementing a ban on mint e-liquids, it could trigger protests nationwide. BVTE will support affected manufacturers in taking legal action, as such a ban could not only impact the e-cigarette market but also potentially lead to a proliferation of illicit products, thereby lowering consumer safety levels.

According to statistics, up to 80% of e-cigarette products in the German market contain mint flavor.
