According to a report in the Bangkok Post on May 5th, the Thai customs department will impose fines on e-cigarette importers, with the fine amount being double the value of the goods plus taxes, in order to deter further sales to the public (especially youth).
The spokesperson for the customs department, Panthong Loykulnan, announced on Saturday (4th) that importers of e-cigarettes, hookahs, or electronic hookahs are now required to pay fines, customs duties, and value-added taxes equivalent to twice the price of the goods. In addition, all confiscated items will be treated in the same manner as other restricted imported items, such as alcohol, cigarettes, and counterfeit goods.
The spokesperson stated that the measure was implemented in response to the rapid spread of e-cigarettes among teenagers and students.
Recently, the cities of Sichuju and Luoyong reported two cases related to e-cigarette use.
Authorities raided a store in the city of Sisaket and seized 4,300 e-cigarette devices. The individuals involved were required to pay four times the value of the confiscated items, totaling approximately 2 million Thai Baht (54,472 USD). In the city of Loei, two suspects were arrested for illegally selling e-cigarette devices. Authorities also seized e-cigarette devices and an order list.
