UK Report: E-cigarette Pollution Severe, Parliament Clears Tens of Thousands of Vapes Monthly
Aberdeen Live reports Aberdeen County Council clears over 25,000 e-cigarette litter from drains monthly, supporting upcoming e-cigarette ban.

According to a report by Aberdeen Live on October 15th, the Aberdeenshire Council in the UK has stated that over 25,000 e-cigarette cartridges are being cleared from streets and road drainage systems every month.

Aberdeen County Council provides approximately 250 tons of street sweepings and gully emptying waste to waste management expert Levenseat each month. These materials are cleaned, separated into aggregates, soil, sand, and organic matter for composting, allowing for their reuse.

In a recent experiment at Levenseat, approximately 5,000 e-cigarettes were separated from 50 tons of street sweepings and ditch waste from Aberdeenshire using a vortex separator.

Veolia has launched the UK's first nationwide e-cigarette recycling service, capable of recycling 94% of all materials used in the devices.

Chairman of the Parliament Infrastructure Services Committee (ISC), Member Alan Tuner stated,

The rapid growth of disposable e-cigarettes is alarming. When we consider all the precious materials used to make them, only to be discarded on our streets, it is undoubtedly a real issue of electronic waste.

According to proposed legislation announced on February 23, 2024, Scotland's ban on disposable e-cigarettes will come into effect on April 1, 2025, with the council of Aberdeen County expressing their support for the ban as early as June 2023. A new study by Material Focus suggests that as the ban approaches, the UK will discard over 250 million e-cigarettes. The annual sales volume of disposable e-cigarettes in the UK is approximately 360 million, with over 5 million being discarded each week, equivalent to eight being discarded every second.
