Tobacco Shops Surge in Virginia, Half of Profits Coming From Vaping
Rapid rise in Virginia's tobacco shops, with over half profits drawn from e-cigarettes.

A recent report in the Newport News Daily reveals a surge in the number of tobacco and e-cigarette shops in Virginia, with more than half of the profits coming from e-cigarettes. The report states that there are over 20 e-cigarette shops in the city of Newport News, Virginia, most of which opened after 2021. Hampton city has 28 such shops, with 21 of them opening post-2020, and Norfolk city has 29, with 9 opening post-2021.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cited in the report indicates a significant drop in traditional cigarette use in recent years, with just 11.5% of Americans smoking, a sharp decline from 21% in 2005. However, e-cigarette products have played a crucial role in filling this gap, especially among the younger demographic.

Local e-cigarette retailers revealed that a vital reason for opening these shops is the potential future sale of marijuana products. As per reports, Virginia legalized marijuana in 2021, with sales licenses being issued from July this year and actual sales starting from 2024.
