According to Boise State Public Radio on September 26, lawmakers in Idaho are planning to consider implementing additional regulations for e-cigarettes and related products next year to curb underage use.
On Wednesday (the 25th), the legislature heard proposals from the tobacco industry, retailers, and health officials. They are considering introducing a formal draft legislation at the next session.
Don Hall, a member of the Twin Falls County committee, stated that...
Increasing the cost and regulation of e-cigarette products will make it more difficult for our children to access these products.
Lobbyists for tobacco giant Altria are pushing for a new registration system to be established in Idaho that would only allow products approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be sold. The FDA has approved the sale of 34 e-cigarette products, all owned by three companies including a subsidiary of Altria.
Retailers and Erin Bennett from the American Heart Association suggest that instead of implementing new registration systems, it is better to enforce existing regulations.
I believe we do not need new regulatory lists, institutions, etc. What we need is to enforce existing regulations, which is where we should start.
Since 2020, any store in Idaho selling nicotine products must hold a permit issued by the state government. However, Bennett believes that many stores do not have these permits and have not been inspected by law enforcement agencies.
The committee has not taken any action yet and will continue to meet later this year.
