Illinois Senator Leads New Law to Ban E-cigarette Sales

Illinois Senator Meg Loughran Cappel leads new law banning e-cigarette shipments to protect youth from harm.

According to Patch on August 12th, in order to protect teenagers from the harms of e-cigarettes, Illinois State Senator Meg Loughran Cappel is leading an initiative to ban the shipment of e-cigarettes to Illinois.

The legislator stated that

The internet makes it easy for children to access e-cigarettes. Manufacturers are designing e-cigarettes to look like stationery, making it difficult for teachers to tell if it is an e-cigarette. After hearing from local elected officials about the significant increase in e-cigarette use in schools, we realize that measures must be taken to protect children from the dangers of smoking.

Senate Bill 3098 prohibits the shipment of e-cigarettes purchased through mail, online, or other remote sales methods to any individual in the state of Illinois, unless the recipient is a distributor or retailer.

The legislation introduced by Logan Capell is aimed at addressing students accessing e-cigarettes disguised as everyday items such as highlighters.

The bill was signed into law on Friday (the 9th) and will come into effect on January 1, 2025.
