Rising Use of E-cigarettes among Dutch Youth Raises Concerns
Only a small percentage of students raised their hands when asked about using e-cigarettes in a Dutch school.

According to a report from World Today News on December 29th, cancer researcher Frank Borm from Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands asked a class of students if they had tried using e-cigarettes, but only a small number of them raised their hands. These students, aged between 12 and 13, were already quite familiar with e-cigarettes, knowing where to buy them, how much they cost, and what flavors are available.

According to data from the Trimbos Institute, one-fifth of young people in the Netherlands, aged between 12 and 25, have reported having experience with smoking e-cigarettes in the past year.

Bolme suggests that e-cigarettes themselves can cause damage to the lungs. E-cigarettes work by vaporizing e-liquid, which contains a mixture of flavors and other substances, including highly addictive nicotine. Additionally, two-thirds of e-cigarette users still transition to using traditional tobacco cigarettes.

From January 1, 2024, the Netherlands will no longer permit the purchase of e-cigarettes with flavors such as pineapple, honey, kiwi, or nuts. Only tobacco flavor will be available for sale.

In fact, this ban had already come into effect on January 1, 2023, but stores were still allowed to sell their existing inventory.
