Switzerland to implement New Tobacco Control Law from October
Switzerland to implement new tobacco law banning sales to under 18s and tightening advertising restrictions, effective October 1st.

According to Berner Zeitung's report on August 28, the Swiss Federal Council announced that starting from October 1, Switzerland will implement a new Tobacco Products Act, prohibiting anyone under the age of 18 from purchasing any tobacco products and e-cigarettes.


The new regulations aim to further control the use of tobacco products and e-cigarettes through strict sales, advertising, and reporting requirements.


The new measures include:


A nationwide ban on the sale of tobacco products to minors has been implemented, along with strengthened advertising restrictions. For example, advertising related to tobacco products is prohibited on posters, public transportation, cinemas, and public places such as train stations, airports, and sports stadiums. All currently smoke-free areas will expand their restrictions to include heated tobacco products and e-cigarettes. Sponsorship of events targeting international audiences or minors is prohibited, and new picture warning signs will be added to tobacco packaging.


At present, Parliament is considering the Tobacco Products Act to strengthen control over tobacco products.

The Bombay High Court has ruled that airport duty-free shops are not exempt from India's domestic regulatory laws merely because they operate beyond the customs barrier, leaving in place a sales halt covering ZYN and FOX nicotine pouches at Mumbai's international airport. The court, however, did not determine that the products necessarily qualify as "drugs" under India's Drugs and Cosmetics Act. The retailers have four weeks to submit product information to the appropriate authorities, including CDSCO, which must complete its review within 30 days of receiving the submissions.

The Zhengzhou Tobacco Research Institute of China National Tobacco Corporation has filed a patent application for an end-to-end method to analyze the migration and transformation of chemical compounds in heated tobacco products. Using GC-Orbitrap/MS non-targeted analysis, the method compares tobacco substrate and aerosol samples to distinguish compounds transferred directly from the substrate from those newly formed during heating, while also calculating transfer rates. In an example involving nine heated tobacco products, the patent identified 17 newly formed thermal decomposition compounds and 38 transferred compounds.

According to CBS Los Angeles on August 27, 2026, California lawmakers have passed Assembly Bill 762, which would phase out disposable, battery-embedded nicotine vapes in the state. If signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, manufacturing and importation of the covered products would be prohibited beginning January 1, 2027, followed by a sales ban on January 1, 2028. Driven primarily by concerns over electronic waste, lithium-battery fires and environmental pollution, the legislation would further shift California’s legal vape market toward rechargeable, refillable or replaceable-pod devices.

The UK’s Vaping Products Duty (VPD), scheduled to take effect in October 2026, is prompting retailers to assess how different vape categories may be affected. UK retailer Vape HQ has estimated potential price changes under the new volume-based tax system, showing that 100ml shortfill e-liquids could see prices rise from around £12.99 to £39.39, a 203% increase, while 2ml prefilled pod vape kits could rise from £5.99 to £6.52, an increase of about 9%. The technology forms salts between 6-methylnicotine and alicyclic carboxylic acids, with granted claims extending to oral products, atomization substrates and electronic atomization devices. Applicant-generated tests reported differences in oxidation stability, in-vitro cytotoxicity and aerosol heavy-metal performance compared with selected benzoate or lactate controls.
