According to Jerseyshore Online on August 19th, the police in Howell, Kentucky conducted undercover operations at tobacco and e-cigarette retailers and uncovered 21 cases of illegal sales of e-cigarettes or flavored e-cigarettes to minors.
Officials stated that out of the 21 violations, 15 were first-time violations and 6 were second-time violations, potentially totaling $24,000 in fines. Specific violations include:
Illegal sales of nicotine products to minors: 12 cases (4 of which are repeat offenses) Illegal sales of flavored e-cigarettes: 6 cases (2 of which are repeat offenses) Non-compliant e-cigarette device retail licenses: 3 cases (1 of which is a repeat offense)
On June 24th and July 31st, the police conducted raids at convenience stores, gas stations, and tobacco/e-cigarette shops. According to the authorities, several of these establishments had already received warning letters and subpoenas from law enforcement officer John Aguiar prior to the surprise inspections.
The police stated that the majority of illegal sales to minors involve flavored disposable e-cigarettes or ZYN nicotine pouches.
Despite the legal age to purchase tobacco products in the United States being 21, the sale of e-cigarettes targeted at teenagers has become popular in the country.
Howell passed an ordinance strengthening tobacco product laws. A meeting was held in March to explain the regulations to retailers. The ordinance sets fines for first-time violations at $1,000; second-time violations at $1,500; third-time and subsequent violations at $2,000, and includes provisions for taking additional action against repeat offenders.
